Germany SUMMARY;LANGUAGE=en-us:Anja Spang: Archaea and the evolving Tree of Life (T oL) DESCRIPTION:Planetary Biology Lectures\nSpeaker: Anja Spang\nInstitution: R oyal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ)\, Netherlands\nHost: Pe er Bork\nAbstract: ZOOM Meeting ID: 984 5970 3567 PASSCODE: 085719\n\nEv er since the recognition of Archaea as a separate domain of life\, their p lacement in the Tree of Life (ToL) and role in life’s evolution has been c ontroversially discussed. For a long time\, data was limited to a restrict ed number of cultivated archaeal representatives\, which were thought to b e predominantly confined to extreme environments. However\, recent improve ments of sequencing technologies and the use of single cell and metagenomi cs approaches to reconstruct genomes of uncultivated microorganisms\, has enabled the generation of a wealth of genomic data of previously unknown a rchaeal lineages of high taxonomic rank. Detailed analyses of genomes of t hese novel archaea taxa has not only provided fundamental new insights int o the metabolic diversity and potential role of archaea in their natural h abitats but enabled analyses aiming to robustly place Archaea in the ToL a nd determine their role in key evolutionary transitions such as the diverg ence between archaea and bacteria as well as origin of the eukaryotic cell . \n I will present a historical perspective of the ‘evolution’ of the arc haeal tree of life and give a synopsis of our current knowledge of archaea l taxonomic and metabolic diversity today. In particular\, I will discuss how genome analyses of the Asgard archaea have allowed fundamental new ins ights into the evolution of eukaryotes and how the investigation of enigma tic DPANN archaea has started to change our view on the earliest transitio ns in the tree of life.\nLink: https://intranet.embl.de/embl-programme/tra nsversal-themes/planetary-biology/index.html\nStream link: https://embl-or g.zoom.us/j/98459703567\n DTSTART:20210420T120000Z LAST-MODIFIED:20210421T201333Z DURATION:PT1H UID:www.embl.org/13365 TRANSP:TRANSPARENT SEQUENCE:0 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
